There are times this reads like a Lifetime movie script, but even in its worst moments, it's so well written, with tight and evocative language and lucid candor, it's not eye-rolling as it would have been in lesser hands. There's quite a bit of yiddishkeit here, especially as she kvetches about her mishpocha, so having some familiarity with contemporary Northeastern US Jewish culture would be helpful not only in understanding the yinglish she sprinkles about, but more importantly the subtleties of the dynamics of her family relationships and her own sense of self. The author is faced with a personal tragedy that forces her to re-examine her life's decisions and her unfulfilled childhood, and it is in this context she relates both what has happened so-far to get her to where she is, and where she winds up going. Personally - I think it’s best as an ‘addition’ > to her last book.Īnd perfectly beautiful exactly the way she is in my book!Ī well-written memoir of a NYC-area Jewish woman starting her adulthood in the 80's as a coked-out, bulimic, alcoholic, college-dropout mistress of an older, powerful, and well-known lawyer whose career and persona defined 80's excesses (here called "Lenny Klein," but without doubt the infamous disgraced litigator Harvey Myerson). I’m not sure if this book is best read as a prequel -or an ‘addition’ to her last memoir, “Inheritance”. The long time readers already knew the missing pieces from past books. Too many holes went unsaid ( or said, but under-developed ), for a ‘newbie’ Dani Shapiro reader. I’m not sure everything would make sense -without having read her other books first. Learning about Lenny Klein.was one of those ( my god)> awful, regretful experiences that one just needs to forgive - learn from - and move on. The details about the car accident - serious as can be - for both her parents was devastating. This is not her ‘most complete’ memoir, IMO. There might be too many holes and unanswered questions unless you’ve already read her other books. This isn’t the very first book I would choose of Dani Shapiro’s to read. (but damn honest), to the redemption and transformation that opened. It was enlightening to be privy to Dani’s self exploration.įrom being young, reckless, precocious, and a little pathetic at age 23, when the car crash happened. as she examined the mystery of her younger self. In this memoir- Dani reflects, and connects - ‘part’ of her childhood and adulthood, (we learned different details in past memoirs). īeautifully blending her past work and her present. in each memoir there is definitely something ‘new’ ( a whole new story we haven’t heard yet),Īnd we're reminded of things she wrote before. We don’t know the content -completely- of what is in each memoir. What stands out is her vulnerability- honesty- and humanity. It doesn’t matter if her writing is polished - but she writes lovely. MOSTLY they/ we/ me.look forward to being in the palm of her hands. have a pretty good idea what to expect when they begin reading a memoir from Dani. privileges, sorrows, college, friends, writing, career, addictions, relationships, regrets, tragedies, deaths, insights, marriage, children, and self growth. we see a pattern:ĭani is sharing her life journeys with us: Over time, ( combing all her memoirs together). She writes about her family in all her books.ĭani grew up in an orthodox Jewish family, as an only child She’s real, authentic, shares a lot about herself, ( her accomplishments, blessings, and well as her losses, depression, struggles, and flaws). The best way to experience her memoirs, are to listen to her read them. I’m not the only Dani Shapiro fan -but I’m definitely one of them.

In the end, Kevin, along with his friends Stuart, Dave, and Jerry, are all dressed in white, singing " I Swear" at Gru and Lucy's wedding. Nefario, and other Minions to El Macho's Lair in order to revert the Evil minions back to their regular forms. Since Kevin was at home, A non-mutated minion named Ken went with the girls, Dr. Delighted to have Kevin back, Minions piled on top of him with joy for his return. However before he proceeded to attack, he was reverted back into a normal minion by Dr. While Margo and Agnes reached Gru's laboratory safely and met with Edith, Kevin fell into the laboratory from the top. When he is about to eat Agnes' unicorn toy, Agnes screamed loudly which stunned Kevin and caused all the glass in the house to shatter. The next day, he broke into Gru's house which scared away Kyle and frightened Margo and Agnes. Kevin being reverted to his original formĪfter Gru left Eduardo's mansion with the girls, Eduardo unlocked Kevin to find Gru. Later, he is brought to El Macho's Secret Lab and is transformed into an evil minion using the PX-41 serum after Tom. He is then shown at the Beach with the other kidnapped minions. However, he failed his attempt to do so and they both floated to the air and disappeared. After Jerry is abducted, Kevin struggled to save himself from having the same fate as Jerry. A light shone from above interrupted their fight, and Kevin left Jerry abducted and waved goodbye to Jerry. Kevin laughed at Jerry for being a coward which caused Jerry to start a fight with him. Terrified, Kevin and Jerry tried to check what is causing the noise but it was just a cat looking through the garbage. The ball is planted on Jerry's mouth and Kevin planned to hit Jerry on the head, but is interrupted by a noise. After Jerry sang them a lullaby, they play golf. Kevin and Jerry are asked to watch the girls. He truly cares about the well-being of the Minion tribe (which is dependent on them having a proper master). In the film Minions, he is the protagonist and leader of the trio in search of a new master. Kevin has a sense of humor, shown when he thought it was hilarious to see Tom turn into a mutant purple minion, but then immediately showed a cautious side when he realized that he was next to be a victim. Kevin loves to make fun of and tease people or Minions, shown when he made fun of Jerry and teased him for being a coward. Kevin is a tall, two-eyed minion with sprout cut hair and is usually seen wearing his golf apparel. Given these criteria, the 9mm Luger will have a free recoil of 4 ft-lbs compared to 3 ft-lbs for the 9mm Makarov.Ĭlearly the 9mm Makarov has lower free recoil, but many shooters report the Makarov as having more felt recoil than the 9mm Luger. The handguns selected for this comparison will be the Glock 45 weighing 2 lbs loaded and the Makarov PM weighing 1.5 lbs. For the 9mm Luger we will consider the Winchester white box 115 gr full metal jacket (FMJ) factory load traveling at 1,190 fps and Fiocchi 95 gr FMJ’s traveling at 1,020 fps for the 9x18mm Makarov. However, free recoil is a more objective measure of how hard a cartridge hits based on firearm weight, muzzle velocity, powder charge, and bullet weight.īoth 9mm rounds are known for having incredibly low recoil, however the 9mm Makarov will have slightly less free recoil.įor this comparison we will compare two popular practice loads for each cartridge. The potential for flinching is also an issue for cartridges with heavy recoil.įelt recoil will differ from shooter to shooter and is often dependent on firearm choice, stance, and your chosen factory ammo or handloads. Recoil is an important consideration when purchasing a new handgun as a round with heavy recoil will be more difficult to control and will slow your rate of follow up shots. On the other hand, your typical 9mm pistol like a Glock 17 or Sig Sauer P320 uses a locked breech design that can handle higher pressures. The 9mm Makarov was specifically designed for a blowback recoil system and is considered by many shooters as the most powerful cartridge to use in this design. This difference is an excellent example of the handgun design considerations for both pistol cartridges. The case capacity for the Luger is measured at 13.3 gr compared to 12.8 gr for the Makarov.Īs such, the maximum pressure for the 9mm Luger is considerably higher at 35,000 psi per SAAMI specs compared to 23,500 psi for the 9mm Makarov. With a longer case, the 9mm Luger has a higher case capacity than the 9x18mm Makarov. In terms of bullet weight, the 9mm Luger typically fires 115, 124, and 147 grain bullets while the 9mm Makarov is typically loaded with 95 grain bullets. The overall length of the 9mm Luger is also larger than the Makarov round, measuring 1.169” vs 0.984” respectively. Furthermore, if it were even possible to close the chamber of a 9mm Mak pistol on a Luger round (it’s not possible), the bullet would not engage the rifling properly and would be horribly inaccurate. There are some who theorize that the former Soviet Union did this on purpose to prevent potential enemies (primarily the Germans at that point in time) from using their ammo in Russian firearms.Īs the 9mm Luger case length is 19.15mm or 0.754” it will not fit into the chamber of a Makarov pistol since the case length is measured at 18.10mm or 0.713”. Therefore, the Russian ammunition requires a slightly wider bullet. American and NATO cartridge regulatory agencies uses the newer method, which is to measure across the grooves. The reason for the difference is due to the Russians using an older method for measuring bore diameter, which is to measure the distance across the lands of the rifling. Although both rounds carry the 9mm designation, the 9mm Luger fires a 0.355” diameter bullet while the Russian Makarov round fires a larger diameter bullet at 0.365”. Perhaps the biggest difference between the 9x18mm Makarov and the 9mm Luger is the bullet diameter each pistol cartridge fires. In 1951, the Makarov PM handgun and 9x18mm cartridge were accepted by the Soviets and the Makarov name was added to the cartridge name. In 1947, Nikolay Makarov developed the Makarov PM pistol using the 9x18mm round. This handgun had a bad tendency to have its magazine drop during firing and the Soviets wanted a direct blowback, fixed-barrel handgun design for accuracy and reliability.īoris Semin developed the 9mm Makarov pistol cartridge in 1946 off the German Luftwaffe 9x18mm Ultra cartridge as it was more powerful than the 9x17mm ( 380 ACP) round used in the Walther PP. In contrast, the 9x18mm Makarov was developed in the early phases of the Cold War to replace the 7.62x25mm Tokarev and its accompanying TT-35 pistol. The 9mm was not adopted by the US military until much later and was instead picked up by the German Imperial Navy and Army in 19, respectively. In 1903, Georg Luger presented the 9mm Parabellum to the US military for consideration at the Springfield Arsenal and was in competition with John Moses Browning and the 45 ACP. The story is so ingenious, it’s incredible no one had thought of it before: A group of terrorists invades a state-of-the-art skyscraper and takes the inhabitants hostage. We want speed and intensity, wit and wisecracks, cartoon violence and things going boom. We don’t want to see ourselves reflected, we don’t want understanding or honesty or intellectual insight. If cinema is the perfect escapist medium-and until someone invents a virtual-reality device that works, it will be-then action movies are its purest expression, the best way we know of for humanity to shake itself loose from the trappings of humdrum reality and take to the ether. But even when they’re just dumb fun, they do what films are meant to do best: to entertain and astonish. Some of our 100 Greatest Action Movies deliver subtext in abundance others, weighty political undertones. Brilliantly choreographed, well-scripted action can make you think, think and feel as much as any drama or thriller, and a flawlessly orchestrated set-piece can conjure up emotions that even romances or horrors struggle to match. As an escape from the nine-to-five routine of life, action movies are always there for us.īut reducing them solely to brawn-over-brains entertainment shortchanges the entire genre. It’s okay to want to take in the odd scrappy, bare-knuckle brawl or a high-speed car chase through the back streets of some crowded European city on the biggest screen possible. Because, as provocative as a chewy three-hour character study can be, sometimes you just want to watch some stuff blow up – and there’s absolutely no shame in that. Some film buffs may scoff at their explosions, overblown stakes and corny dialogue, but action movies offer some of the most visceral filmgoing experiences out there. Hurts isn't being used like a QB, he's being used like Ricky Williams on the dolphins, so every team knows what's happening every time he steps on the field. Instead, we have the same shit, every week. I honestly think that if we got rid of Doug, we would have a lot of talented OCs licking their chops to get the head coaching job here and have the opportunity to coach Wentz and our talented skill position players and take advantage of our offense. If our once MVP candidate QB looks like Blake Bortles out there after 2 other years where he was also good, then something is inherently wrong with what's going on out there. Instead, we hired a bunch of people to apparently do nothing but have interesting titles while Doug still designs and calls the most milquetoast offense in the entire league. However, I am of the mindset that if you have a QB who's had 3 statistically good years in a row, with the final 4 games of last year being "win or go home" and he showed up in those games big time, then you need to look at both the player and the coaching staff around him. But I'm not going to say he's been good, or even average this year. I'm a big Wentz fan, and find myself defending him against the people who say "he's always been bad" on a weekly basis. But when it's dozens of stats telling you the same story, then it's probably time to start listening. I agree you can spin one or two stats 10 ways to Sunday. Wentz is last in the league in terms of Defense Adjusted Yards Above Replacement, which accounts for situation and opponent ( source).Wentz has faced the 7th easiest set of matchups since Week 5 ( source).Out of the pocket, Wentz is at 5.2 y/a, 56% completion, and 72 passer rating ( source).Wentz has the 4th highest bad throw percentage in the league (21%) ( source).Wentz has the highest number of "danger players" - any play in which the QB lacked awareness or took an unnecessary risk that could have resulted in a TO ( source).Top performers like Stafford, Rodgers, Josh Allen, all suffer from higher drop rates than Wentz ( source).Wentz's receivers have the #12 best separation in the league ( source).Wentz has the lowest "true completion percentage" factoring out unpressured throwaways and dropped passes (64.2%) ( source).Wentz has the 5th lowest "on target" throw percentage in the league (71%) - he's missing his targets 30% of the time ( source). In the last game, Wentz had a better PFF passing grade under pressure than not ( source).Wentz has the fifth highest time-to-throw in the league (2.93s) ( source).80%+ of Wentz's sacks have come when he held the ball for 4.0+ seconds ( source).Wentz has the second highest "pocket time" - average time the QB had in the pocket between the snap and throwing the ball or the pocket collapses (2.8s) ( source). The O-line has the seventh highest pass block win rate ( source). On plays with 0 pass rush wins - meaning no defender beat his blocker within 2.5 seconds of the snap - Carson Wentz has a QBR of 44 ( source). There's tons of excuses floating here that the Department of Wentz Defense is coming up with. But to not recognize that there is a huge heap of blame that lands on Wentz's feet is just willful ignorance. Yes, everyone on the offense is a problem. Last in QBR, last in RTG, highest INT, highest fumble, lowest completion rate, the list goes on. We all know the common stats showing Wentz's historically poor drop off this season. Two kinds of UV filters are currently being used in sunscreens for minimization of these adverse effects: organic (chemical) filters, e.g. The detrimental effects of exposure to UVA and UVB rays, which can cross the epidermis, have been reviewed and it was concluded that such exposure leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, DNA/protein/lipid damage, activation of various signal transduction pathways, compromised skin defense systems, altered growth, differentiation, senescence and tissue degradation, to name a few. One type − ultraviolet (UV) radiation − is composed of three wavelengths: UVA rays, which range at 320–400 nm and are not absorbed by the ozone layer, UVB rays, which range 290–320 nm and are partially absorbed by the ozone layer, and UVC rays, which are stopped by the ozone layer. There are several types of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. Unfortunately, although global use of sunscreen is continuously on the rise, so is the prevalence of malignant melanoma − a cancer type which is mainly caused by sun exposure,. Sunscreen application is the main strategy used to prevent the maladies inflicted by the sun since the 1930s. Taken together, this review advocates revisiting the current safety and regulation of specific sunscreens and investing in alternative UV protection technologies. In this review, data regarding the neurotoxicity of several organic filters: octyl methoxycinnamate, benzophenone-3 and −4, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, 3-benzylidene camphor and octocrylene, and two allowed inorganic filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, is presented and discussed. Reviews on the role of these agents in developmental and endocrine impairments (both pathology and related mechanisms) are based on both animal and human studies, yet information regarding the potential neurotoxicity of these agents is scant. Alongside the evidence for increasing levels of these agents in the environment, which leads to indirect exposure of wildlife and humans, recent studies suggest a toxicological nature for some of these agents. Physical filters scatter and reflect UV rays and chemical filters absorb those rays. In the past century, a variety of protective agents against UV exposure have been developed. Despite the continuously increasing frequency of sunscreen use worldwide, the prevalence of certain sun exposure-related pathologies, mainly malignant melanoma, is also on the rise. Sunscreen application is the main strategy used to prevent the maladies inflicted by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. |
